After 10 years serving loyal customers in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, Fable Diner will be closing at the end of the month.
The restaurant will serve its final meals on Aug. 23.
Since its opening in 2016, Fable Diner on the corner of Main Street and Broadway has served as East Vancouver’s go-to farm-to-table restaurant.
According to a news release from owner Ron MacGillivray, people have been skipping going to the eatery due to the Broadway Subway Project, a 5.7 kilometre extension to the Millennium line that will add six underground stops past VCC-Clark.
“With the delayed completion of the nearby Broadway Subway station and no definite completion date confirmed, the current terms did not allow the business to continue operating sustainably through this period,” reads the press release.
The extension has been under construction for over six years, since 2020. It was originally supposed to open this year, but was delayed to 2027 a few years ago.
Over the years, the diner and its sister restaurant Fable Kitchen, has been recognized with a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide, been featured in the Food Network, and appeared on Guy Fieri’s iconic show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
“It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re proud of what we’ve built here and the community that has grown around the restaurant,” MacGillivray says in the release.
In recent years, Fable isn’t the only restaurant that has been forced to shut down due to the Broadway Subway Project. Both Simit Bakery and The Greek on West Broadway closed in 2024 and 2025, respectively from construction woes.
Although Fable’s Mount Pleasant location will no longer serve hungry Vancouverites come September, Fable’s other two locations in Kitsilano (1944 West 4th Ave.) and Downtown Vancouver (755 Richards St.) have no plans to close shop yet.
