Vancouver is being represented in a major way in the blockbuster movie The Odyssey.
The Christopher Nolan epic stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca and a war hero who spends 10 years lost at sea after the Trojan War.
But Damon’s well-defined biceps in fight sequences belong to someone else — a Vancouver woman.
Devyn Dalton is an actress, stunt double and dancer who replaced Damon in numerous fight scenes. As a professional stuntwoman, she performs dangerous and highly physical actions, such as high falls, fast car chases, and fight scenes.
Standing at only four-feet-six-inches, Dalton was the perfect height in forced perspective shots where Odysseus fights the giants called Laestrygonians. The giants were played by seven-feet-tall stuntmen.
In an interview with Damon, journalist Josh Horowitz commented on Dalton’s arms, exclaiming, “I’m not one to objectify, but this is the greatest bicep work I’ve seen outside of a Hemsworth film.”
In response, Damon explained the forced perspective shots, saying “When we did the forced perspective stuff with the Laestrygonians…there were these stuntmen who were all seven feet. And they got stuntmen who were under five feet.”
“My double was a woman, a female stunt performer who had the greatest arms I’ve ever seen.”
The Odyssey isn’t Dalton’s only high-profile stunt double role. She has worked on other major movies and TV shows such as The Last of Us, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and Fall of the House of Usher.
Dalton’s role highlights Vancouver’s longstanding reputation as one of North America’s busiest production hubs. The city is nicknamed “Hollywood North” for a reason. It has become a regular filming location for high-grossing movies and major television series.
